Kindergarten Registration & Screening

If you have a child that will be five years of age on or before September 30, 2018, please call the K-2 office during the month of May and register for Kindergarten.  Our next screening date will take place on Monday, May 21.  Begin locating your child’s birth certificate, shot record, social security number, proof of residency and any applicable custody papers.

Defiance City Schools offers two kindergarten-aged programs, an early-five program (KinderStart) and regular Kindergarten.  Both are all day, every day programs.  After each child’s screening, a team of academic professionals will meet and gather their findings.  A recommendation will then be made to parents regarding a placement for their child.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the K-2 office @ 419-785-2260.

NOTE:  If your child will not be five by September 30, please consider the ESC preschool program at our old middle school.  Call (567) 444-4808 for more information.

Teacher Exemptions

It’s hard to believe we are planning for next school year already, but we are! We have a “no request” policy for teachers. This has worked well for our district and our classrooms are very well distributed based on boy/girl ratio, as well as behavior and academic needs of our children.  We will follow this same policy for the 2018-2019 school year. If you have a teacher that you would like to exempt your child from having, please download the appropriate form or see the office secretary for a copy. Requests will not be accepted.

Mentoring Opportunities at DES!
If you would like to spend some quality time with one of our KinderStart-Fifth grade students, we have several mentoring opportunities available to you throughout the school year.   Click on the link below to get started.  We will need you to complete the applicaiton and return it to our Defiance County Mentoring Supervisor.  They will process your application, do a quick background check, offer training and you're all set!  We ask that you visit with your assigned student at least once a month, but encourage once a week (avg. time is 30 minutes).  This is a great opportunity to give back to your community and build the self-esteem of a child at the same time!  Win-Win!
