Distance Learning Will Continue

With our governor's new order, schools will remain closed for the remainder of the year.  Please click the link below to see the updated choiceboards for your grade level.  We ask your cooperation in ensuring your child is completing school work on a daily basis.  Below you will find office hours for each staff member.  Teachers are available from 8:30-3:30 each day; however, they may be busy teaching a lesson and unable to accept your call or email.  During their designated "office hours" is your best chance to catch them.  They will be 'on call' during that hour each day and have their cell phone and laptop handy.

Daily Office Hours

  • 9:00-10:00 - Music, PE, Library, Art, Tech

  • 10:00-11:00 - KinderStart

  • 11:00-12:00 - Kindergarten (Held and Shindler will be from 1:00-2:00)

  • 12:00-1:00 - Grade 1

  • 1:00-2:00 - Grade 2

As a reminder, teachers have Facebook pages, Google Websites, Remind Apps, etc. as ways to communicate with you and push lessons out to your child.  Be sure to join their options.  Grades 1 and 2 have ipads with more options for online learning.  Weekly attendance will be taken for your child based on participation in a variety of these links.

3-5 Distance Learning Plan

We recognize that the first few weeks of mandated school closures were a challenging transition to online learning for everyone. We wanted to take a moment to thank our TEACHERS and STAFF who have done an amazing job of transitioning from in-person learning to on-line learning. As educators, they are trained to teach students face to face, and we feel they have done an amazing job transitioning to a digital format.

As with any transition, there are always learning curves, and we continue to refine our processes. Our first change in this process is to designate one subject per day each week to assign work for the ensuing week. These may be a live or prerecorded lesson.  This way, students will only receive work in one subject per day. It is our hope that this will allow everyone – students, parents/guardians, and teachers – to better manage assignments for each subject. Further, based in guidance from the Ohio Department of Education, the total work assigned should be no more than 2 hours per subject weekly. These changes will take effect on Monday, April 6, 2020.

Attached you will find the plans for distance learning. Your child's teacher will be sharing more specific information via google classroom

Defiance Elementary Kindergarten Registration and Screening Information

Kindergarten registration for children entering Defiance City Schools next fall will begin on Monday, March 2 and run through Friday, April 10.  To register your child for kindergarten, parents simply need to call the school office at (419) 785-2260 and select the K-2 building. Parents will select a screening date and time during their registration call.

Children are eligible for kindergarten if they will be five years of age on or before September 30, 2020.  The actual screening of incoming students will take place during the week of April 13-16. Defiance City Schools will offer an evening screening opportunity for working parents.  The evening appointments will be on Tuesday, April 14th. All other screenings will take place during the school day between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Children will be screened for hearing, vision, speech and language concerns.  Children will also be given an academic assessment as well as a play-based assessment.

Defiance City Schools offers two kindergarten-aged programs, an early-five program (KinderStart) and regular Kindergarten.  Both are all day, every day programs. After each child’s screening, a team of academic professionals will meet and gather their findings.  A recommendation will then be made to parents regarding placement for their child.

Important papers for parents to begin collecting for the screening appointment include a valid birth certificate, immunization records, a social security number, proof of residency and any applicable custody papers.  All of this information must be collected before your child can begin kindergarten in the fall.
