Johnson was a four-year standout on the Defiance High School softball team, earning first-team Western Buckeye League honors each season. As a freshman Johnson helped the Bulldogs to the regionals. The following three years Johnson was first team all-district and all-state. A scholar-athlete at DHS, in 2004 Johnson was second team all-regional Louisville Slugger and the following year participated in the North American Select softball team that traveled to the Netherlands and finished as runners-up. Johnson holds numerous pitching records at Defiance including: most career shutouts (30), career ERA (0.84), most no-hit games (5), strikeouts in a season (233) and most strikeouts in a career (714). She went to the University of Findlay on a scholarship but only stayed one year due to an injury. Johnson went on to pursue cosmetology and is currently an independent contractor at Cynthia Michaels Salon. Johnson and her long-time boyfriend William Nossaman live in Defiance with Kayla's five-year-old daughter Brielle.
