Roger Grogg

Grogg was a three-sport letterman in football, basketball and baseball at DHS. Born in Evansport, Grogg was a standout athlete. Grogg was team captain his senior year and earned all-state honors. That year Grogg was the number one receiver in the Lake Plains Conference. Grogg was also most valuable player on the 1964-65 basketball team and the squad's leading rebounder. In baseball, Grogg held or still holds school records for most runs batted in during a game (seven), most runs scored in a game (five), most triples in a season (four) and most home runs in a career (four- before there was a fence). During Grogg's senior season team finished11-6. Grogg was recruited to play all three sports in college by the likes of Miami, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Georgia, Nebraska, Florida, Penn State, Cornell, Virginia, The Naval Academy, Rutgers, Colorado State, Michigan State and North Western before accepting a scholarship at the University of Michigan. However, due to the illness of his father, Grogg could not attend Michigan. Grogg joined the Defiance Fire Department in 1970. He retired in 2001 as a Lieutenant. Grogg also makes and donates funeral flag holder to local families. Grogg and his wife Mert have been married 50 years and have three daughters, Kelly, Tamara and Amy. There are also six grandchildren Cole Jennings, Kara Jennings, Zane Jennings and Hana Jennings along with Grace Szabo and Olivia Szabo
