DEFIANCE BASEBALL: BULLDOGS ROLL PAST ELMWOOD

Published:

BLOOMDALE -- Defiance pulled away from Elmwood, scoring nine late runs, to earn an 11-0 win in six innings during baseball action on the road Saturday.

Derek Turner and Mazen Kanouh combined on a one-hitter for the Bulldogs (18-1, No. 1, Division II, Prep Baseball Report, OHSBCA). Turner went five innings and allowed just one hit with seven strikeouts and two walks to improve to 3-0 on the season.

"Derek really battled today," stated Defiance mentor Tom Held. "His stuff wasn't as good as his first two starts, but he threw strikes and the defense played great behind him. Mazen was very steady again, he's a guy who just eats up innings for us out of the bullpen. He's a quality pitcher."

Leading 2-0 heading into the fourth inning, Defiance scored four runs to go in front 6-0.

Turner singled to start the inning and advanced to second on an error. A bunt single by Dom Romero moved Turner to third, before Joe Keween reached on an error allowing Turner and Romero to score and the DHS catcher to race to third.

Ethan Willitzer followed with a RBI single to plate Keween, and later scored on an Elmwood error. The Royals finished with five errors.

"I wasn't happy with our energy to start the game, but I thought we really came together as the game went on," Held said. "We've played seven games this week and I know the guys are tired. That was a good win against a quality program."

The Bulldogs finished off the Royals with five runs in the top of the sixth, including a three-run homer off the bat of Zeigler, his fourth of the year. Zeigler finished with a single, home run and three RBI, Gentile had three singles and three runs, Romero singled three times and Alek Smith doubled.

"It was really good to see Dom Romero put together back-to-back good games, he was struggling early in the season," concluded Held. "Dom Gentile has been on fire in the No. 2 hole and Robbie is Robbie. His home run was a bomb to center field."

Defiance returns to action on Tuesday on the road at Lima Shawnee in WBL action.
