DEFIANCE EDGES BRYAN TO IMPROVE TO 22-1

Published:

Defiance put runs across in all but one inning as the Bulldogs held off Bryan in an error-filled outing at Booster Field on Saturday, 8-6.Both teams committed four blunders in the game, though Defiance mentor Tom Held wasn't too concerned with his team's defensive play going forward.

"Overall, we had some good plays defensively," explained Held. "We did have a few breakdowns, some defensive lapses, but those are easily corrected.

It was good to get a win against a team like Bryan. They've beaten us the last two years, so it was a big deal for us to get a win against a well-coached team like they are."

Rob Zeigler and Austin Yant led the team from the dish, with each slugging a single and home run to lead the nine-hit Bulldog attack.

Commented Held: "They (Zeigler and Yant) struggled a little big against Celina the other day (Friday) and for both of them to get big hits like that is good for their confidence going forward."

Mazen Kanouh earned the win on the mound, holding the Golden Bears (No. 14 PBR) to a single run and hit in 31⁄3 innings pitched. Kanouh and reliever Ethan Willitzer allowed only six singles from Bryan in the game.

The Bulldogs (No. 1 PBR, No. 2 Coaches Poll) hit the field again on Monday for an outright WBL championship on the line at Lima Bath (12-11, 5-3 WBL).
